Alarelin – Mechanism of action

GnRH, or gonadoliberin, is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus. Its main function is to stimulate the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to secrete gonadotropic hormones: LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (folliculotropic hormone). These hormones in turn control the function of the gonads, i.e. the ovaries in women and the testes in men.

The peptide alarelin acts by binding to GnRH receptors in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It is an agonist, meaning that it stimulates these receptors into action. However, unlike natural GnRH, the peptide is resistant to proteolytic enzymes, which prolongs its action in the body.

By mimicking the effects of GnRH, alarelin activates the production and release of these gonadotropins, thereby influencing the menstrual cycle and reproductive processes. Use in the treatment of infertility

In women

The peptide alarelin is mainly used in the treatment of infertility associated with ovulation disorders. Due to its pituitary stimulating action, it can be used to induce ovulation in women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other menstrual cycle disorders.

In men

In urology, alarelin peptide can be used to treat male infertility caused by testosterone deficiency. By stimulating the pituitary gland to produce LH, the testes are stimulated to secrete more testosterone, which can improve male fertility. In sport, it is used as part of PCT – that is, post-cycle therapy with anabolic agents to speed up the so-called, unblock.
